Driving drum grooves, hypnotic piano patterns and ethereal timbres from bowed double bass craft a stripped back sound world that is simple, immersive and honest.
Barbara Fiig, Timon Matern and Johan Kjær Houver stumbled into each other at the music education program at the Classical Music Conservatory RDAM as self-described 'blue sheep' of the jazz world. Their trio Blåly is rooted in collaboration and community, drawing on elements of musical poetry, jazz, folk, Nordic and Classical traditions.
A new beginning
Exploring themes of identity, motherhood, new beginnings, mental health, and the cathartic potential of music, their debut record 'Nystalgi' is built around Barbara Fiig's personal approach to the piano. Combining gentle lyrical melodies and colorful melancholic harmony, Blåly perform and interpret each piece with a mature, spacious and textural sound palette that captures the feeling of an intimate live performance.
The trio is currently working on their second record, set to release in fall 2026 on April Records. For this record, Blåly continue the exploration of their atmospheric and Nordic sound, with a special emphasis on their collective writing process.
This is Blåly
Blåly is a made up word open to interpretation. Derived from the word 'ly', meaning 'shelter' in Danish, the name Blåly is reflective of the shared feelings of safety and introspection that the trio find in their music-making and that they hope to impart onto their audience.
